Coit Tower

Located on top of Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower is one of the best known landmarks in San Francisco. Here, you can see the best views of the city. The tower is named after Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who was a wealthy patron of the San Francisco firefighters. After the death in 1929, and the tower was constructed to fufill Coit's wish “for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city I have always loved.”

The architect of the tower was Arthur Brown Jr. who was also the architect of San Francisco’s City Hall. The tower which took 5 years to build was completed on October 8, 1933. Later on in history during the Works Progress Administration (or WPA), which started back in May 6, 1935, murals from 25 artists were painted between the years of 1933-1934. These works of art were funded by the WPA.
