Chinese immigration to the United States really first started back in the mid-1800's. Most of the Chinese immigrants who came to San Francisco were from the Guangdong provenance in southeast China. They, like many others arrived to San Francisco during the Gold Rush. Chinatown became a place where newcomers to the city could go to when first arriving to San Francisco. Throughout the years, more shops, housing, and more slowly started appearing, which is the start of the community and neighborhood that we know today.

During the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, Chinatown got hit just as badly as many of the other areas of San Francisco. However due to this earthquake, Chinatown was rebuilt. This lead to a new wave of Chinese people immigrating over to the United States, who took home in San Francisco.
